THE JENNY FRANCHOT & ALBERT JOHNSON DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP


The Berkeley Student Foundation is pleased to present the Jenny Franchot and Albert Johnson Diversity Scholarship Program.  The  Scholarship awards reflect the Berkeley Student Foundation’s commitment to diversity in higher education and are intended to encourage under-represented minorities to attend and remain at U.C. Berkeley and to promote the diversity of the U.C. Berkeley student body.  The Berkeley Student Foundation awards up to thirteen annual, private scholarships of  up to $1,000 each ($500 for the initial Spring semester award) renewable up to four years to incoming freshmen or renewable up to two years for junior transfer students.

Eligibility Criteria

1) Candidates must belong to one of the following under-represented ethnic categories (according to the standards set by the University of California):
•    African American
•    Native American
•    Chicano/Latino
•    Southeast Asian
•    Pacific Islander
•    Multi-ethnic (at least one parent must be a member of one of the aforementioned groups)
•    Disabled

2) Candidates must be incoming or first year students to U.C. Berkeley (Freshmen or Junior Transfers)

Selection Process

Students are required to submit an application with all the necessary information.  Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Scholarship Committee based on the following:

10% Academic Achievement – An applicant’s academic achievement shall be based on the Applicant’s GPA in high school and SAT I and II (or ACT) scores.  Community college transfer’s academic achievement will be based on their GPA’s from community college.
 
30% Financial Need – An applicant’s financial need shall be based on the Student Aid Report (SAR) that results from the filing of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), other income available to the applicant and other grants received by the applicant.  If the applicant does not use FAFSA, a statement of net worth of parents and income available to the applicant and parents/guardians will be required.

30% Community Service  – An applicant’s community service and leadership shall be based upon an assessment of the applicant’s resume, information supplied on the application having to do with past community service, and two references from the applicant’s community service experience.

30% Personal History – An applicant’s personal history shall be based upon an assessment of the applicant’s personal statement as to his/her background and personal/character references.
